Mondo Duplantis Shatters World Record at 2023 Diamond League Final in Eugene

# Mondo Duplantis Shatters World Record at 2023 Diamond League Final in Eugene

In a jaw-dropping display of athletic prowess, Sweden's very own Mondo Duplantis concluded the 2023 athletics season with an extraordinary performance at the Diamond League Final in Eugene on September 17th. With a mind-boggling pole vault clearance of 6.23m on his first attempt, Duplantis not only clinched victory but also etched his name even deeper into the annals of sports history by adding an additional centimeter to his own world record, which he had previously set in Clermont-Ferrard back in February.

## A Record-Breaking Feat

This astounding achievement marks Duplantis's seventh time breaking the world record, with the remarkable twist being that he has accomplished this incredible feat twice in an outdoor setting – both times at the iconic Eugene venue. His previous outdoor record of 6.21m was established during last year's World Championships, a testament to his unparalleled mastery in the discipline.

## Dominance in Three Attempts

Duplantis's dominance in the competition was nothing short of spectacular. With grace and precision, he sailed over the bar at 5.62m, 5.82m, and 6.02m with seemingly effortless ease. The competition intensified as it progressed, with world silver medallist EJ Obiena, his closest rival, faltering three times at the 6.02m mark.

## A Brush with Glory

The 23-year-old sensation, riding high on his remarkable form, set his sights on the seemingly unreachable 6.23m mark. It was a height he had narrowly missed at Brussels just a week earlier. This time, however, the bar bore witness to only a gentle brush from Duplantis before it remained steadfast. In a surge of emotion and elation, he wheeled away from the bar, greeted by the warm embraces of his fellow competitors. Sam Kendricks, one of Duplantis's competitors, even hoisted him high in celebration.

## A Moment to Cherish

The electrifying atmosphere continued as Duplantis received well-deserved accolades from his parents and stood tall on the track's advertising-surround, absorbing the adulation of the crowd. As he basked in the glory of his astounding accomplishment, Duplantis shared his thoughts, saying, "The limit is very high, and I hope that I can continue to jump well and keep jumping higher than I did today. But, for now, I’m not really thinking about anything except enjoying this moment and enjoying what I just did."

## A Passion for Pole Vaulting

Duplantis's passion for pole vaulting is evident in every leap he takes. "For me, I just try to jump high. I love pole vaulting so much and I’ve loved it ever since I was just a little kid," he explained. "If I’m able to take pole vaulting to another level and I can get as many eyes as possible watching it by jumping really high and doing some cool things, then that’s a job well done by me. I’ve been jumping pretty well here. I’m two for two right now on world records coming here to Hayward. I think it’s just a combination of everything -- it has absolutely everything. It has the history, it has the modern touch. The track is really fast, the crowd and energy are fantastic. Everything just building up to what I need to be able to break the world record."

Duplantis's meteoric rise in the world of pole vaulting continues to captivate audiences around the globe, and with performances like these, there's no telling just how high he can soar. His unwavering commitment to his craft and his boundless enthusiasm for the sport make him a true inspiration to aspiring athletes everywhere.
